State of the Blogosphere Part 4: Spam and Fake Blogs

Awesome! Dave was nice enough to publish part 4 of his State of the Blogosphere series. This time we try to deal with spam.

Dave hides a little easter egg in his post. He provides some links to spam sites but it nice enough to include a rel of nofollow. This was of course the first thing I check because I thought it would have been funny for Dave to complain about link spam but contribute to their Pagerank. I should have know Dave was too smart for that!

Of course he covers the nofollow rel attribute a few paragraphs later. This still bothers me because there are perfectly legitimate uses of links in comments that should really be included in ranking systems. Since I don’t really have a better solution I think that for the time being I’ll have to keep quiet.

Photo Matt also notes that 80% of the pings to pingomatic are spam. Thats frightening!
