I Top500-2005-08In response to the controversy around the Technorati Top 100 it looks like Feedster has released their top 500 blogs:

Each month, Feedster brings you a list of 500 of the most interesting and important blogs. Enjoy browsing to see what people are reading, to find feeds that will bring topics of interest to you on a regular basis, and to discover new voices in the Blogosphere.

I still fail to see why this is that interesting. Top 500 lists are nice but this is the short head not the long tail. Blogs are cool specifically because of the long tail.

Update:

More from the Feedster blog:

Today, Feedster launched the FEEDSTER Top 500, a ranking of the most interesting and important blogs in the US. The ranking is achieved by taking into account factors such as the number of inbound links over time; if the blog has been recently updated; and the elimination of obvious non-blogs that have appeared on other top-blog lists.

Both Scott Rafer and Scott Johnson have blog posts on the subject. Nice to see them posting some issues they’ve had with their ranking algorithm. For example:

Except for one notable exception, if you don’t have your own domain or subdomain (e.g. PostSecret, #10 on the list and hosted at BlogSpot), then you were excluded from the list. That leaves out LiveJournalers and a few other hosted systems. We don’t think that any of those blogs would have made the list, but let us know if we’re wrong.

Another cool note is that they’ve published the raw data if you wanted to write your own visualizations. I’d really love to see more companies do this when they release statistics. They have the data to start with and it just lets bloggers help them out by providing alternative views.

Update:

Jason is impressed with the Feedster 500.

Update:

A lot of blogs like Silicon Beat seems to be happy to know where they place. Hopefully I’ll show up on next month’s revision of the Top 500. I wonder how long it takes to compute. Couldn’t be that long I’d think. Wonder why they only burn it every month?

I couldn’t agree more. However, the customers are always right, and they are clamoring for this sort of thing. So we did it.

  2. Yeah.. I hear you Scott. The customer is always right. Of course adding the additional 400 is a deeper view off the long portion of the tail so maybe this is a step in the right direction.

    Keep up the good work!

There’s been a lot of comment recently on the Feedster 500. Just to prove I’m not bitter about not making the list, I’ll provide just a couple of remarks/links:
