Wow. This is awesome. It looks like Google Secure Wifi was a 20% time project:
Why did Google develop Google Secure Access?
One of our engineers recognized that secure WiFi was virtually non-existent at most locations. As a result, he used his 20% project time to begin an initiative to offer users more secure WiFi access. Google Secure Access is the result of this endeavor.
This is a huge win for Google recruiters. Every geek in the world has 20% time projects. Most of these are unofficial and almost never supported by your company. Essentially every company I’ve ever worked for has discouraged my 20% time projects. Luckily I’ve picked companies I’ve wanted to work for 100% of the time.
Knowing that Google would through their corporate effort into my pet project is really inspiring. It’s one thing having an OSS pet project that people could use but it’s another to have your company support it and deployed to millions of people.
