Scobelizer has some excellent points:

But, I think the future of hiring isn’t going to be hiring people for jobs. It’s going to be hiring people for building huge expansive visions of where this industry should go. You think that Gabe Rivera of Memeorandum is capable of working “a job?” I don’t. Neither is someone like David Heinemeier Hansson or Blake Ross or Mena Trott or Matt Mullenweg or Kevin Burton.

There has always been a slot for alpha geeks who don’t want to be hires within some major BigCo. Usually these BigCos have to do something unusual to acquire this talent. Usually by acquiring their startup and placing them in golden handcuffs. Another way is to find out what they’re passionate about and putting them on it full time (Apple has a bunch of BSD geeks).

Of course in most situations you already have had to prove yourself and change the world before you land your dream job.

Prior to starting TailRank I did the interview round at a number of Silicon Valley companies and startups. In the end I decided it was just not for me. Some of the offers were really tempting though. Maybe in another life…
