Just a quick post to announce two open source snapshots I’m releasing.

The first is a fork/branch of the Jakarta FeedParser. While at Rojo we tried to work with the Apache Software Foundation but found the bureaucracy to be less than enjoyable.

This branch contains a bunch of API changes and support for addition standards as well as Atom 1.0 support. If you’re a Java developer working on HTTP or XML feeds (Atom, RSS, etc) you should really check out this library.

The other library is a fork of the Torque project. A long time ago (5-6 years now) I worked with the ASF to create two open source projects (one of them being Torque). While at Rojo we adopted torque as our OR layer but found it lacking in a number of areas (specifically MySQL performance). The changes necessary to improve Torque were small at first but quickly spiraled out of control until we had a full blown fork. At the time I was so busy with Rojo I didn’t realize it was happening until it was too late.

I’ve contacted the ASF about the Torque fork and this is the first part of healing the wound. Hopefully at some point in the future all of these changes (as well as the uplevel changes that the ASF has made) will merge into one source base.

Thanks go out to Rojo for allowing me to release Torque as Open source.
