Songbird Rocks!

200602082312Songbird launched today and the blogosphere is buzzing.

I was lucky enough to swing by their offices about two weeks ago and was really impressed. These guys have their act together. Cool product and a very cool team.

We were actually talking about NewsMonster (a previous company I started before Rojo) which was based on Mozilla and my experience building a product based on their platform. It’s super cool to see people using Mozilla as a framework instead of just a browser.

What most people don’t realize is that Mozilla is driven by a pretty impressive backend technology for user interface design named XUL. Everything is based on Javascript and XML. Sound familiar? (*cough* Ajax)

It’s going to be really interesting to see how this moves forward. They’re Open Source, decentralized, and based on Mozilla. How can you go wrong?

As soon as these guys have their OS X port ready I’m going to dump iTunes.

Songbird is also looking for a XUL hacker to join their team. Feel free to contact me if you want an introduction.

i agree. songbird is fantastic. it blurs the lines between media player and web browswer, which is going to open up a whole new set of user experiences.

  2. XUL is neat, and I’ve looked into playing with it, it’s just one of those “this is going to take more time than I can give” things, like Widgets (Dashboard/Yahoo!, etc) which is also all JS/XML

  3. Have you actually used it? I just installed it and it is slow and painful to use. I know it is just a preview (pre-alpha?) but this thing sucks. Uninstalled.

Yesterday Songbird released their Preview version to the public. Songbird is a pretty damn cool music player that is built on top of the Mozilla Framework. So, it not only is a music player, like Itunes, but it also has…
