Is it possible to turn off gtalk while in gmail? I hate it. It’s very annoying to have their chat GUI popup when I mouseover a mailto: link. I’m also sick of my IMs coming up while I’m in gmail.
This was just a dumb idea. Either remove the feature or allow people to people to disable it.
Right now though this is the only gripe I have against gmail. For the most part its fast and has a simple interface.
Am I alone here?

if you do it in secure mode, replacing “http” with “https” the gmail talk seems to go away

At the bottom of the screen, look for ‘Gmail view’ section. In there, ‘standard without chat’ turns the stupid thing off. I wonder how you survived this long. :-)

Alex.

yep set your gmail display language to ‘English (UK)’ and it will take gmail back a few version where there were no webclips or chat

I have kinda figured out a way … kinda
you have to sign out when gmail opens (there is a drop down in the status message) and then you can log into Google Talk, the program.

hate is such a light word for gtalk. product integration vs. user experience…..

OMG. Why did they hide a *setting* so far at the bottom of the page.
That makes *no* sense.

for a company that is supposed to be a user experience expert switching chat and doing other little simple things is a real PITA

I completely agree about gmail/talk. I find google sliding down the slippery slope of intrusion. If my gtalk is off on my desktop – it should be off in my web-based gmail session.

I personally like the chat integration thingy. However, I agree with you that the popup-on-mouseover is hugely irritating.
There should be an easy “on/off” button that won’t mess with your status if you’re logged in through another client.

YES. You are alone.
CHAT incorperated into e-mail was one of the best things since filters [or folders].
