To put a little pressure on all those Web 2.0 companies which have foolishly failed to ship an OS X version of their product I decided to create this little OS X Hall of Shame.

If you’re on the hall of shame it’s not necessarily a bad thing. It means we love your company and want to use your product but you’ve failed to provide a version for us Apple lovers.

It’s amazingly simple to get off the list. Just release a version of your product for OSX. I’ll update the Hall of Shame and even write a review of your product.

For all the product managers claiming that OS X only has 10% market share you need to think again. OS X has more than 50% market share in the early adopter market. I’d also suggest that OS X has more than 70% usage among bloggers and certainly A-list bloggers.

Here’s what I could think of off the top of my head. If I missed any please add a comment and I’ll updated the post inline.

The Web 2.0 OS Hall of Shame

Riya – Cool product. I love these guys! I soooo want to run it on OS X.

Meetro – Seems kind of cool. I haven’t seen any screenshot and it requires Windows 2000/XP… ug. (Update: Apparently they have an alpha which is a step in the right direction)

Songbird – These guys are super cool. One of the coolest Web 2.0 companies out there. Apparently the OS X release is due any day now but they’re trying to do the right thing and release a universal binary for both the Powerbook geeks and the MacBook Pro adopters. To be honest I hated having to add this entry and can’t wait to remove it.

Yahoo Music Engine – Windows only. I hope they have plans for OS X.

Update: apparently TypePad is having problems right now and no one can comment on this form. If you have a comment just send me an email and I’ll update the post.

Ted Rheingold says:

I’ll give a round of applause for 2 that have imeem and slide. LastFM improved their mac app and SonicLiving’s first app is for OS X.

  1. It is really sad that SongBird is on the list, but it is understandable.

  2. we want it as much as you. it’s on our roadmap for 0.2 release.

mac developers w/ mozilla experience willing to lend a hand should hit my email, or better still, send me their resume.

    written on a MacBook Pro,

Riya works in OS X, just not Safari. Big distinction.

    Yea.

Our Songbird OSX developer is a volunteer working in his spare time. We’re not allowed to pay him and give him full time hours.

Makes it hard to Obey the they who Think Different.

Like every other post I make to the public, this one too revolves simply around the word “eventually.”

  5. Hey Mig, Rob.

Interesting that you can’t pay him. Wondering if anyone’s listening that can do the port.. :-)

If only I had more time I’m sure I could finish it up . :-/… ug.

I’ll start weeping for OS X users who are shut out of various Web 2.0 products when Apple makes iTunes available for Linux users. I have an iMac, but these days I use Linux more than OS X and I’m pretty disgusted with how Apple seems to try to shut out interoperability. Deliberately breaking RSS so that it’s very hard to listen to the Standford lectures, for example, unless you use iTunes is a lot more shameful than simply not supporting a platform. I don’t think I will be buying any more Macs.

  7. Bubbleshare has excellent Mac support. With both a plugin for iPhoto and a Mac widget. Nice.

    Mcubed–

Yes, but so few people use Linux right now. I think it’s all a matter of independence. Apple has never had to depend on anybody, and thus they don’t feel like they should give anyone anything. I know the pain, though. Since Macs and Linux OS’s are UNIX based . . . .they’re practically brothers. Still . . .why boycott Macs?

I’m also eagerly awaiting Songbird to be available!!!

(P.S.! Mcubed, if you want to listen to the Standford lectures, just wait for Songbird, haha! They’re writing for Linux, too.)
