Blogger uses HTTP 404 for Maintenance 9

This is stupid. Blogger is offline right now for maintenance. The only problem is that it’s now returning HTTP 404 status codes for every Blogger blog in the universe. So now the crawlers will start assuming that the blog is generating an error. There’s probably a better way to handle entire service outages. Probably a [...]

Why WordPress is Spam Free and Blogger is a Spam Farm 1

Great post explaining why wordpress.com is a ham farm and Blogger is a spam farm. In late 2005, WordPress.com took what some considered an extreme step and banned Google Adsense as well as other advertising networks from its service. As of this writing, there is no way to add any advertisements to a WordPress.com hosted [...]

An Open Definition of Blogs 1

Scoble puts forth his definition of blogs which I find far too narrow…. If you’re a blog you apparently have to send pings:I would go as far as saying that a site that does not ping a pingserver, like weblogs.com, is NOT a blog (private Web sites don’t ping weblogs.com and are NOT discoverable by search engines). That’s not a very healthy requirement.

Random Sampling Blogger Splogs 0

Google Blogoscoped did a random sampling of Blogger and found that a significant percentage were spam gblogs:Marty Kay made an interesting comment in regard to Splots (spam blogs) on Google’s Blogspot.com:“Funniest thing I saw was a bunch of comments on one spam/link site, that was totally irrelevant but pointed to ANOTHER spam site. The spammers are spamming each other.”

SDForum on Web Architecture – (Sept 14) 0

I’ll be on a panel on web architecture along with some other really smart individual at SDForum’s Web Architecture Event (Sept 14):Software architecture is getting a lot of attention and architecture for the Web is on the march again. RSS: A Podcast? A vidcast? A software app? 0

If you’re dealing with RSS how do you know if it’s a podcast, vidcast, etc.The RSS Disposition Hinting Proposal seems to tackle this problem:Handling all RSS feeds with a single RSS aggregator is no longer desirable…. And news and blog RSS feeds may be handled by yet another piece of software.Today branding an RSS feed with the “application/rss+xml” MIME type is no longer sufficient to allow a web browser to handle an RSS feed properly without having to probe (and understand) the file.
